This tutorial will teach you how to encrypt a Linksys router with WPA2 encryption (the most powerful encryption as of when this is being written). If you wish to use a different type of encryption, or are using a different brand of router, you may still follow this tutorial because it's all very similar.

Open up your internet browser, and in the address bar, type your default gateway. For Linksys routers, the default gateway is usually "192.168.1.1" (no quotes). For other routers, it is sometimes different. If "192.168.1.1" does not work for you, open up a command prompt (Start > Run > cmd) and type "ipconfig" (no quotes). It will display something similar to this screen:

That's how you find out what your default gateway is. Type that number, exactly as you see it, in the address bar of your browser.

After you type the default gateway and press enter, you'll be prompted with an "Authentication Required" screen:

Unless you have set up a password for the router settings, it should be something like this (try them all until one works):
Username: none - Password: admin
Username: admin - Password: admin
Username: admin - Password: none

Now you are logged into your router's settings. Click the "Wireless" link at the top, then click "Wireless Security," a sub-link of the "Wireless" link.

Choose these exact settings:

Now click "Save Settings" at the bottom. All done.
