This tutorial will teach you how to configure the size of the virtual memory paging file in Windows XP. If you are getting low virtual memory errors or your system is running somewhat slow, this may be the solution to your problem.

So now we must answer, "What size should I make my virtual memory?" Your virtual memory size should be 1.5 multiplied by the amount of RAM you have in your machine.

To change the size of your virtual memory, go to the Start menu, right click My Computer, and click Properties. Now that the Properties window is open, click on the Advanced tab.


Now, under the "Performance" category, click Settings. A new window comes up, click the Advanced tab. Now click the "Change" button, seen below:


Now, make sure your C: drive is selected, then click custom size, and in both the "Initial size" and "Maximum size," put whatever number is equal to 1.5 x your RAM. If you have 1 gig of RAM, that'd be 1.5 x 1000 (approximately, it doesn't have to be precise), giving you 1500 as seen in the screenshot below. This screenshot might help you out if you can't figure out some of the stuff I'm trying to convey:


After entering the proper size, click Set, close out all windows that I told you to open up, and restart your machine.
